Cave In
Heavy Pendulum (Relapse)
Today, Cave In return with Heavy Pendulum, their first full studio record in over a decade. After an understandable hiatus, with the loss of their previous bassist and vocalist Caleb Scofield, the band delivers a thoughtful and heartfelt ode to their departed friend and bandmate. This is a hard hitting album full of plenty of distortion and progressive metal-core kick assery. After a rough couple of years, this is a reminder that pendulums swing both ways.

Everygrey
A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament) (Napalm)
There isn’t enough therapy in the world to prepare for a new Evergrey album. A Heartless Portrait, their 13th studio album, brings an arsenal of soaring vocals and vicious riffs to the list. Anyone yearning for a hearty dose of pure unadulterated emotion and all-around progressive intensity should check this out. You’ll soar listening to this album, but the sky stays overcast the whole time.

James LaBrie
Beautiful Shade Of Grey (InsideOut)
Beautiful Shade of Grey, Dream Theater frontman James LaBrie‘s fourth solo album, ventures heavily into some sensitive territory. The record delves immediately into a lot of smooth crooning and melodramatic lyrical musings. At the same time, the album also has a few moments that almost feel emotionally touching, and it definitely brings some nice guitar riffs. At the same time, there’s a distinct feeling throughout that you’re watching your drunk uncle flirt with a waitress.

Septicflesh
Modern Primitive (Nuclear Blast)
With their 11th studio album Modern Primitive, Greek metal group Septicflesh return with a complex mix of musical depth and hard-hitting intellectualism. The record is full of mood and storytelling, delivering more of the cinematic ambiance that we’ve come to anticipate from the eccentric five piece. Hints of artsy, avant-garde acts like Dead Can Dance put momentum behind this ultra-heavy album for critical thinkers. Go deep or go home, right?
