In early 1980sSSan Francisco, disco’s golden era began to wane in the shadows of the unfolding AIDS epidemic. This grim chapter introduced profound sadness and loss, deeply shaking the core of the city’s dance music community. Enter Razormaid!, an unconventional remix service, known for its extensive edits, pointed artistic flair, and audacious sense of humour. Razormaid! emerged from the ashes of despair like a phoenix, ushering in a new era that, paradoxically, led to one of San Francisco’s most enduring and influential contributions to electronic dance music. As the city grappled with immense challenges, Razormaid! played a vital role in rallying the spirit of its denizens.
In the backdrop of the burgeoning remix culture, while numerous remix boutique services sprouted up, Razormaid! carved a niche for itself with an almost avant-garde flair. It wasn’t just about splicing and dicing tracks; their method exhibited an aesthetic sophistication reminiscent of Factory Records’ multi-dimensional creative ventures.
By 1984, when Razormaid! was conceptualized, San Francisco’s iconic gay club scene was resonating to the lavish, hi-NRG rhythms pioneered by the likes of Patrick Cowley. However, Razormaid! zagged when others zigged. Instead of aligning with the prevailing sound, they veered towards an eclectic mix of the cold precision of synth-pop, the raw energy of Belgian EBM, and the barebones aesthetic of what would later earn the moniker “minimal wave.”
Razormaid! possessed an uncanny knack for uncovering the most esoteric electronic gems from Europe, introducing them to wider audiences. Razormaid! has long been revered for infusing their unmistakable touch: rejecting the conventions of commercial appeal or artist prestige, their focus was unwaveringly on the pulse of the music – be it EBM, techno, or New Beat. Today, Razormaid!’s records are coveted relics of a bygone era; their tangible weight in history mirrored by the exorbitant prices they fetch in the resale market.
The eMERGENCY heARTS compilation, birthed in conjunction with Re:Mission Entertainment, stands as a testament to time’s passage. This anthology draws from the vast reservoir of Razormaid!’s coveted remixes spanning four decades, until 2020. Lending his auditory precision, the album bears the masterful touch of Mark Pistel from Consolidated.
On this compilation, listeners are treated to legendary acts like Front 242, Microchip League 2.0, Tanz Waffen, and T-4-2. A special nod is given to the underground club anthem “Powerstation” by St Che, Tackhead, and Adrian Sherwood; now gracing streaming platforms and CD for the first time ever.
A journey into the depths of electronic music, this compilation is a must-listen for aficionados of the genre.
