Stockholm Dark Electronic Artist Roya Debuts Moody and Unsettling Video for “Break The Lines”

Posted on 21/05/2022 By

Stockholm dark electronic artist Roya’s video for her moody new single “Break The Lines” is a captivating, gorgeous, and unsettling work of performance art.

Depicting herself as an Eve figure seated on a velvet sofa, the singer is offered various situations by an unseen hand of God: an apple, an empty wine glass she promptly smashes; being blindfolded and silenced by a rope, being draped with a writhing snake.

“I wanted to capture all the feelings of frustration, helplessness, anger, and even euphoria that come along with being drawn to things or people that are ultimately bad for you but you just keep hanging on,” she says. “It’s such a terrible state to be in.”

The steady demenour and soft colors stand in stark contrast to the Roya’s expressive powerhouse of emotions, underscored by an unrelenting bassline. It is a testament to divine feminine power within constraints, be they societal or of our own doing.

Roya’s soft, sensuous vocals brings easy comparisons to Goldfrapp, Ladytron, Björk, Depeche Mode, and Enya. Originally from Olympia, Washington, Roya now dwells in Stockholm, Sweden and has previously received Sweden’s biggest award in independent music for synth album of the year. Roya continues to push her pensive sound further with every release and plans for a new album to come out later this year. “Break The Lines” was released by the label eshqi records.
