Coming out of Toronto’s vibrant post-punk scene, Odonis Odonis have consistently defied the tendency for a band to coalesce and stagnate into one particular musical style. With their newest track, “No One Left,” from their highly awaited EP ICON, the duo – Constantin Tzenos and Denholm Whale – announces an audacious transformation in their sonic persona.
In the past, Odonis Odonis have fearlessly traversed myriad genres, from the edgy tones of post-punk and EBM to the atmospheric textures of industrial, shoegaze, and surf rock. Their latest offering, however, marks a thoughtful shift towards an introspective breed of alt-rock, imbued with poignant undercurrents.
The duo’s innovative sound pulls from diverse influences, including the hauntingly resonant A Place To Bury Strangers, TOBACCO, and Vancouver’s ACTORS. Following their 2021 album Spectrums, they started working on this collection of five songs that comprise ICON, writing them geared towards some of their favorite veteran and up-and-coming artists. “We wanted to bring out what we admire in them and prove that we can do a variety of styles,” explains Whale.
Adding another layer of complexity to Odonis Odonis’ creative range, the band has enlisted one of those favorite artists, Jason Corbett, the frontman of ACTORS, to contribute his distinctive vocal prowess to the alluringly melancholic track “No One Left.” This latest creative endeavor underscores Odonis Odonis’ continuous evolution and the dynamic scope of their songcraft, confirming their position as relentless explorers in the vast music landscape.
“Being such a big fan of Odonis Odonis I jumped at the chance to contribute vocals to this song,” says Corbett. “I love working with artists I admire. Listening to the music really set the scene for what came out lyrically. I was responding to the emotional content of what I was hearing. The rest just unfolded in the vocal.”
The video, showcasing the beauty of nature with stock footage of roses and other various flowers, gorgeously illustrates the song.
Since their inception, Odonis Odonis have unfailingly followed their musical compass, delivering five full-length albums and gracing countless stages and festivals across North America and Europe. Over an exhilarating span of eleven years, they have adventurously navigated an array of genres. Their past and future projects have been selected with intentionality, placing a high premium on collaboration with individuals who command their respect and admiration. Despite an ever-evolving music industry, this commitment to their core values demonstrates the band’s persistent focus on creativity and respect for artistic integrity.
And somewhat ironically, by shedding their skin as a band, the duo have embraced the individual spotlight more with ICON.
As they herald the next stage in their evolution, Odonis Odonis opt for a departure from the conventional mechanics of the music industry, choosing instead to channel their energies exclusively into purposeful creative ventures. This manifests in their production, scoring, and mastering at Tzenos’s newly minted studio, After Hours.
ICON is out June 9th on Pirates Blend & Felte.
