Mastodon Use a Caveman Troy Sanders to Hint at Something

Just minutes ago, Mastodon posted a weird, albeit pretty funny video on their socials involving bassist/vocalist and damn good Little League coach Troy Sanders doing his best caveman impression. Little is known as to what the video could mean, but half the fun is speculating, isn’t it?
Posted with the question “What will Troy find out?”, the video sees Sanders walking around in a caveman outfit and munching on a turkey leg before coming out of the brush and looking bewildered at whatever’s behind the camera. It’s short and doesn’t tell us a whole lot, but I think the band left a pretty big clue.
Throughout most of the video, you can hear that cool drum intro that plays before “Crystal Skull” off of their 2006 album Blood Mountain. Given the fact that its 20th anniversary isn’t for another two years, it can be an anniversary set of some kind like other bands are doing. Maybe they’re planning a special re-issue of the album? Maybe they’re just saying ‘fuck it’ and playing the album in full for a special touring run? Who knows.
Or maybe it’s none of those things. We have been put on notice that the band might be working on something new this year, according to comments made by guitarist Bill Kelliher during the Guitar Summit in Mannheim, Germany last year.
“Hopefully…we can start sitting down and actually riffing out and writing a new record. Because it’s already time to — it’s past time to write a new record, even though Hushed and Grim was a double album, and I feel like there’s a lot more juice for the squeeze of that record, but we just haven’t — because of COVID, we didn’t tour enough on it. We haven’t done a proper European tour. There’s a lot of places we’ve missed and it’s, it’s hard these days to get out and tour because everything has changed.”
So what do you think? Check out the video below and tell us what you think Mastodon could be hinting at in the comments.
