Marty Friedman Won’t Rule Out Another Megadeth Reunion Down the Road

Last weekend, guitarist and dude who can unironically say “I’m big in Japan” Marty Friedman took the state at the Budokan and shredded his ass off. But it wasn’t what he did, but who he did it with that was news, as he rejoined Dave Mustaine and the rest of Megadeth to play a couple tunes. Watching the footage from that night, it was hard not to feel a pang of jealousy, as fans in attendance got to witness something most fans never thought would happen — a former Megadeth member not being pissed off at Mustaine long enough to share a stage with him.

In all seriousness, it was a great moment that let a new generation of fans get to witness how awesome Megadeth was with Friedman in the band. While speaking with Guitar World, Friedman dropped a hint that maybe the Budokan event won’t be the only time he temporarily returns to Megadeth’s lineup.

Godsmack and Staind North American Tour Could Be The Largest Collection of Tribal Tattoos This Summer

“We [Megadeth and Friedman] are both playing at Wacken Open Air festival in Germany this summer, so you never know.”

Megadeth and Marty Friedman at Wacken Open Air sounds like it would be an amazing spectacle to see. With both of them on the bill, it almost seems like this is absolutely, definitely going to happen, so I’d keep an eye out if you’re attending.

To back that up even further, Friedman recently told Consequence that he was always down to playing with Megadeth once more, stating that the “door has always been open.”

“It’s really just a matter of doing something that has meaning to it. Meaning for them and meaning for me. So, Budokan is sort of a no-brainer. But if something were to come up that would be a good thing for them and a good thing for me, and add value to it, then I’m all for it. As far as I’m concerned, their band is just kicking so much ass right now, I can’t imagine them needing me for anything. [Laughs] But Budokan was wonderful. There’s other things in the future. My door’s open and we’re on great terms, and I love all the guys in the band. It’s very casual.”

So even though he left on somewhat bad terms (thanks “Breadline”), all of that has become water under the bridge and both he and Mustaine have forged a friendship again. And let’s not forget that Friedman and Kiko Loureiro have collaborated in the past, so who knows? Maybe there’s a future where Marty-deth exists. It’s just a shame Nick Menza couldn’t be around to see this.
