Blak29 Featuring Steve Zing of Danzig Release New Album

Posted on 05/03/2023 By
Blak29

Steve Zing of Danzig and Samhain fame is back with a new record, The Waiting, via Cleopatra Records.

For those not familiar, Blak29 are named for Zing’s June birthdate and love of roulette. The new music on The Waiting pulls from influences of Zing’s former bands, but also presents an updated sound.

Zing takes on vocals and drum duties on the release, and Dan Tracey plays bass and guitar. Both members wrote and produced the album. Zing also recruited Danzig bandmate Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Quiet Riot), Tommy Victor (Prong, Ministry), and Jyrki 69 (The 69 Eyes) for guest spots on the record.

The record has definitely elements of punk, as well as classic metal and ’80s goth, even prog. Focusing on groove as well as catchiness, the record pulls in underground influence but also create something more digestible to the public.

Zing says about the album: “We start with ideas in my head, and somehow Dan can figure out what I’m trying to get across. We were both pretty amazed at how easily ideas were bouncing off each other, which led to the full-length, Love and Anger, in 2016. The new release on Cleopatra Records, The Waiting, hales from the depths of the living and the dead.

“This is not a metal or punk album as some would expect, but we consider it a personal tragedy and triumph, blend of ideas and emotions that resulted in a combustible cocktail. Turn up the volume… more to come!”

Standout tracks on the album include “Bleeding Love,” one of the first singles the band released in February to build hype for the album, and “End of Days,” which features a lot of influence from Zing’s previous projects.
