Avenged Sevenfold’s New Single “We Love You” Feels Like an Off-Brand Mike Patton Project

Man, I just can’t put my finger on this latest Avenged Sevenfold single. The obvious info is that it’s titled “We Love You” and it’s off the band’s upcoming release Life Is But A Dream, but that’s about it — oh and they put out a 3D music video, which is also a thing.

But that’s about where my comprehension of what they’re doing comes to an end. Upon listening to this song, I can’t help but feel like they’re trying to sound like a Mike Patton project yet not really meeting that mark. It’s got the odd vocal harmonies, the strange way the guitars and bass play against each other, but then it’s off to an industrial kinda sounding pre-chorusy bit before… It’s just all over the place. At one point it devolves into a really big, spacey section that reminds me a bit of David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” if I can sound absolutely crazy. Oh and there’s some straight up metal sections that kinda kick ass.

Like I said: it’s all over the place. If this is indicative of the rest of the album, then the world is in for a wild ride.

Tonight’s show in Las Vegas marks the band’s first gig since 2018, kicking off a tour with Falling In Reverse. You can find dates and buy tickets for that tour, as well as their follow up tour with Alexisonfire this September, below.
