Anthrax’s Joey Belladonna Will Record His Vocals “In Due Time”

Seven years have passed since Anthrax‘s last album For All Kings dropped and though work is ongoing for its follow up, fans are going to have to wait a bit longer. We’ve known for a while that we won’t get the new slab of Anthrax tunes until next year, but it seems like there’s some confusion as to when certain people are going to be heading into the studio.

During a recent interview with Tulsa Music Stream (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna said he’s planning on getting to the studio sometime in the future, though he’s not entirely sure exactly when that’ll happen.

“[I am] not sure [if it’s gonna be] in the next month. Even as of today, we’re still kind of putting some timeframes together. It’s all scheduling, really, for everyone to put together. But in due time, I’ll get there. I just bang out what I gotta do and just go for the mountain — get the best stuff out that I can.”

The question of whether Belladonna was going into the studio next month or not stems from a recent Scott Ian appearance on Sirius XM’s Trunk Nation where the guitarist said he was going to “have three songs ready for [Joey Belladonna] to sing on by next month.”

In that conversation, Ian said whether that happened or not really relied on him “being happy with the lyrics I’m writing.” When asked whether he contributes to the band’s lyrics or not, Belladonna revealed that while he loves writing lyrics, they’re more Scott’s “thing” as far as songwriting in the band goes

“I love doing lyrics, but there’s a lot of lyrics that Scott [Ian] — he just loves to do it. It’s his thing. He just digs into such — these topics that he likes to go and get into, and we all kind of have our own little thoughts on the songs. But I get in there and I really kind of — I dig into the whole thing a lot further. There’s a lot of stuff that I have to… When you start singing on something, you really have to find the pockets of what you wanna do, what kind of tone I wanna throw on it and how I wanna go for a certain range for certain things and how I approach it is very important. There are lyrics, but at the end of the day, I have to go in there and still sing as good and catchy and appropriate as I can to make this stuff my thing, my style. Obviously, we’re not the hit-oriented type of thing, but I’m always going for something cool to catch you off guard and neat and different. I have my own style, so I just kind of do my thing.”

Man, I gotta say — it’s been far too long since we got new Anthrax music. Sure, we’ve waited far longer but with Charlie Benante out drumming for Pantera and Ian working with Mike Patton and the guys in Mr. Bungle, it only makes sense that the Anthrax album would take a while to complete. Here’s hoping the band’s able to deliver the goods in time for early next year.
