If you’re not familiar with Blackbraid and the Native American angle he’s bringing to the black metal realm, you’re fucking up. As one of the most exciting new artists to emerge from the genre in recent memory, there are very few instances where I won’t highlight Sgah’gahsowáh’s impressive solo work. That’s why when footage of his October 2022 performance at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar showed up in my inbox, I immediately came here to share it with you all.

As you’ll see in the clip below, Blackbraid tore it up. The track, “Basefoot Ghost Dance on Blood Soaked Soil,” was a ripper on Blackbraid I, but it’s a whole other beast live.

For those of you that don’t know who Blackbraid is, he’s a atmospheric black metal has proven to be a welcome divergence from your typical Scandinavian fare. Yes, he makes music about topics like death, rebirth, nature, and cultural oppression — all topics that American Native Americans are acutely aware of.
