The music created by VV & The Void is focused on exploring the delicate balance between different forces, such as grace and imbalance, feminine and masculine, and lunar and solar energies. They also delve into the dichotomy of birth and death from an unconscious perspective. Their sound is often described as ethereal, gothic, minimal-drone, and noir, and their approach to these themes is subtle and nuanced.
In Grinder, their latest release from her album THE CAGE (out now via Icy Cold Records), Veil melds her tender vocals with an industrial Motorik rhythm, evoking the passage of time like a malfunctioning grandfather clock. The result creates an unsettling yet serene experience, similar to wandering through a lucid dream. The track is a blend of Kate Bush, The Knife, and Dead Can Dance yet stands out in its distinct atmospheric beauty.
The accompanying video mirrors this dreamlike quality, oscillating between a confined room and an expansive garden, with intermittent close-ups of lips. There is a visual nod here to Kate Bush’s classic take on Wuthering Heights, but the overall effect is trance-inducing, imbued with a witchy and surreal atmosphere that captivates the viewer with its hypnotic allure, reminiscent of the dramatic and gothic flair of the mad Miss Havisham and the tragic pathos of the Brontë sisters. Unlike the relative whimsy of Kate Bush’s choreography, we really feel the confines of the psyche in Grinder.
