Unearth Dropped a New Single and Video for “Mother Betrayal” and Confirmed Ken Susi’s Out

Boston metalcore outfit Unearth released a new single and accompanying music video earlier today for “Mother Betrayal,” the second single off the band’s upcoming album, The Wretched; The Ruinous.

As an aggressive song that seemingly blends the band’s more thrashy tendencies with melodic death metal and metallic hardcore, “Mother Betrayal” is an interesting ride from beginning to end. According to the band, the track “kicks up the aggression and ferocity beyond previous recordings while also veering into new territories musically, vocally and structurally.”

According to vocalist Trevor Phipps, the song thematically deals with humanity’s constant destruction of the environment and the eventual repercussions that’ll have on us all.

“‘Mother Betrayal’ is a warning that we are smashing past multiple ecological tipping points caused by our dependence on fossil fuels that will forever alter life on our planet.”

When released on May 5, The Wretched; The Ruinous will be the band’s first album in five years, serving as the follow up to their 2018 studio effort, Extinction(s). Phipps said guitarist Buz McGrath wrote most of the songs for the new album during the height of the pandemic, when most Americans — and most of the rest of the world — were forced to stay inside.

“[Buz] pushed himself to get out of his comfort zone and explore what Unearth is, both past and present. Buz adding these new elements and killer song structures inspired me to be more diverse vocally. The Wretched; The Ruinous is still Unearth, but it’s also the most dynamic record we’ve ever done.”

While the band was excited to announce the new single and release the video, they also confirmed that founding guitarist Ken Susi was no longer a part of the band. We’d initially heard that Susi was out from the man himself back in October 2022, but this was the first time the band acknowledged it. Phipps said the decision stemmed from a need to “take a break” from each other.

“It simply came time for Unearth and Ken to take a break from working together. He’ll always be a large part of the story of this band, and we wish him the best on all of his endeavors”

Regardless of Susi’s departure, the new track sounds great. You can check it, along with some upcoming tour dates, down below.
