Ethel Cain has released her debut album, Preacher’s Daughter, via Daughters of Cain. Check it out below.
Preacher’s Daughter is an evocative, cohesive project. At times, Cain leaves all of herself in the album’s powerful choruses. Other times, she creates sonic hallways almost too familiar and painful to walk through.

The album focuses on Cain’s relationship with her mother, herself and what it means to leave your home behind for good. On her journey, Cain reckons with her relationships with love, violence and religion, as well as the ways the three intersect.
The artist connected with Alternative Press earlier this year for issue #402, where she described her vision for the debut album.
“It’s pretty much just a classic American tale,” she explains. “A common theme that I like to write about is intergenerational trauma. Things that have been passed down through generations and how your parents’ or your grandparents’ actions can affect you. It’s very much about this lineage of women and how all their lives interconnect. Each album focuses on a different woman. I want to explore how your actions affect others and the relationship between a mother and her child and how things come full circle.”
