Corey Taylor Claims His Next Solo Album Will Be 2023 and 2024’s ‘Best Rock Album’

Corey Taylor 2020

It’s been a minute since we’ve all collectively wondered what Corey Taylor thought about a topic, so it was only fitting that we’d finally get to hear his opinion on something: his upcoming album. Titled CMF2, it’s going to be the follow up to his 2020 solo effort CMFT and has been in the works for a while.

After releasing a new Slipknot album last year, it’s time to catch up and find out how Taylor’s feeling about the project so far and how he thinks fans will receive the album. While speaking with NME, the often outspoken vocalist let it all out, claiming it’s going to be a massive release of listener’s minds for two years.

“[This album is] going to be the best rock album of this year, and the next. I can’t wait for people to hear this album. It chews up that first record and spits it out. It’s more dialed in with everything people expect from me, so it’s got hints of ‘CMFT’ but there are also hints of Slipknot, Stone Sour and all the stuff I’ve done in my acoustic shows. It’s got everything for everybody. People are going to fucking lose it.”

Now, he most likely doesn’t really mean that, since we’re in such a highly digital, constantly moving world. And what else was he supposed to say, it’s gonna suck ass? Still, it wouldn’t exactly be Corey Taylor speaking if he wasn’t hyped and passionate about the work he’s doing.

Apparently, 26 songs were recorded for the album with the first single “Beyond” slated for release as soon as this May. CMF2 currently has a tentative release window of September.

Speaking of Taylor’s other work with Stone Sour and Slipknot, the Iowan madman with a mic said fans of his should be able to recognize his other projects in this new album.

“Some fans will recognize a few [of the tracks] from other projects that I’ve done while others were written just before we went into the studio.

“I was really inspired by my band, but also the reaction that the first solo run had, where people leaned into everything,” he continued. “They liked the acoustic stuff, they liked the heavy stuff, they liked the fun stuff. We wanted to make a hybrid thing, but not have it feel chaotic.”

With Slipknot now free of Roadrunner’s clutches and Stone Sour in perpetual hiatus, Taylor said he could see himself doing more solo albums in the future, noting that the recording situation is definitely way less intense than it is with his other projects.

“It’s almost a weird peace I’ve found myself in. For the longest time, I always felt very comfortable in a band situation. A lot of the time, people look to you as the de facto leader but maybe you’re not necessarily the one who’s making the decisions. It can also be a lethargic process trying to get people on the same page.

“With this, it’s so gratifying. It’s so much fun recording, but it’s also been played by dudes who know what the fuck they’re doing and love the music. It’s a cool vibe. It’s a fun vibe. I think people can see that camaraderie. This project has definitely reignited my love for playing music. It’s kind of showing me what my future is going to be, for better or for worse.”
