Switzerland’s Future Faces step into the stark glare of post-punk’s neon afterglow, reviving the austere edge of the ’80s with a modern twist on synth-driven cold wave’s bone-chilling ambience. Their sound teeters between the ethereal voids of goth-tinged atmospheres and the relentless pound of industrial rhythms, capturing the ghostly flicker of a bygone era and bending it into a sleek, present-day pulse.
Since their 2017 debut, they’ve carved out a niche with three personal albums and performances pulsing with rare intensity. This multi-instrumentalist collective stands out for its daring dedication, defying the stale standards of a bygone productivity. Their tunes strike a hedonistic chord against today’s austerity, coaxing listeners to revel amid the ruins of our reality. Each note blares like a rebellion against the mundane, each pause a deep dive into our collective past.
I Kiedys Ja (And Once I) marks a monumental move for Future Faces, diving deep into the murky waters of memory and emotional alienation. Patrycja Proniewska, the spellbinding siren of Belgrado and Fatamorgana, drapes the track in a mystical mist with her haunting Polish vocals, intensifying the introspective descent into yesteryear and sentiment.
The lyrics chart a yearning for a bygone era of blissful freedom and painlessness as the song drifts through memories of a time untouched by torment, questioning the possibility of reclaiming that serene state. The recurring motif is the stark contrast between past pleasure and present perplexity. We hear elements of Fatamorgana, Kontravoid, and The Soft Moon in their sound.
The quartet ventures into a new artistic realm, where synthetic sounds carve out a canvas for uncovering buried emotions and forgotten memories. This relentless, resonant track both honors nostalgia and illustrates music’s power to connect different eras, encapsulating the essence of pivotal life moments. Every note and pause hits like a flashback; each beat plunging further into the passageways of time.
The striking, black-and-white sci-fi spectacle, helmed by Renzo André, propels us on a cosmic crusade through twisting wormholes of the time-space continuum. With the whole crew in tow, the film blends a retrofuturistic vision with both nostalgic nods and hopeful glances toward humanity’s horizon. Its blend of bygone beauty and bright aspirations charts a course through the stars.
