NYC Retro Wave Act Bunny X Debuts the Disco Pop of “Daydreaming”

Posted on 22/04/2023 By

Hailing from New York City, Bunny X has been captivating audiences with their Italo disco and retrowave tunes since 2013, drawing inspiration from the music, cinema, and culture of the 1980s.

“Daydreaming,” the third and concluding single from Bunny X’s forthcoming album Love Minus 80, draws inspiration from cinematic masterpieces like Drive and Thief, as well as recurring characters in esteemed science-fiction author William Gibson’s Sprawl and Bridge trilogies. The song pays tribute to the essence of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” period, yet simultaneously preserves a danceable, yet shadowy retrowave motif, with nods to Primo the Alien, NINA, Kid Moxie, Thought Beings, and CHVRCHES.

“Daydreaming,” a symphony of the subconscious, unveils the clandestine sentiments festering in the interstices of two souls. Proximity breeds a fervent yearning, yet the vagaries of circumstance conspire to keep them tantalizingly apart. The track oscillates between the spectral and the tangible, a poignant melody suspended in limbo. “Daydreaming” captures the ephemeral essence of love unfulfilled in this requiem for the emotionally adrift, suspended in a twilight world. The music transcends temporal constraints, providing sanctuary for desires that dare not speak their name. In this labyrinthine dreamscape, reality surrenders to fantasy; longing morphs into the wistful dance of the unattainable.

Straying from the sunlit nostalgia of their debut album, Young & In Love—an ode to John Hughes released in October 2021 through Aztec Records—Bunny X embarks on a shadowy journey of introspection with their sophomore creation, Love Minus 80. Love Minus 80 weaves a tapestry of moody, dark pop retrowave melodies, imbued with the spirit of a diverse range of sci-fi/fantasy novels, films, and television sagas, primarily hailing from the 1970s and 1980s.
