In the history of new beat, there are few more memorable samples than “Germany calling.” Taken from a Lord Haw-Haw propaganda broadcast during WWII, the sample is short but effective and has remained in our psyche ever since Voyou’s 1987 club record, “Houseman / Germany Calling.” The lineage of the sample finds its way—thirty-some years later—to Karolina Bnv’s new EP, Yet to Come, out of November 22nd.
The Berlin-based producer shows homage to the classic underground hit with repetitive loops, prominent snares and deliciously light acid lines that fill in the crevices of the mix. Here, Karolina Bnv adds a tenderness and mystique that few producers are able to manage: tough danceability with a graceful, spellbinding charm. “Germany Calling,” alongside the rest of Yet to Come, is for dancing—yet it carries a sophisticated temperament, one that nods to the past but steps steadfastly towards the future.
