Interview 10 Fragen – 10 Antworten

10 Questions / 10 Answers

  1. Wann und warum seid ihr Musiker geworden?

When and why did you become a musician

Charles : My dad played trombone in a bossa nova / jazz band when he was a student and he played the guitar and piano as far as I can think of. So music was always present, it was always part of my life. I picked up the guitar as my main instrument when I was 11 and started writing songs. Tom e that’s when it all started.

  1. Was sind eure Merkmale? Was macht euch speziell?

What are your characteristics? What makes you special?

Charles : I consider myself a melodist first. I’m interested in melodies, I’m not a guitar hero so I focus on the harmonies in songs I play on.

  1. Wer und was hat euch inspiriert?

           Who and what inspired you?

Charles : Everything inspires me and I think I can say the same for the whole band. On the music side, we all grew up during the same period so we all like bands from the 70’s up to new music made today, Jack and I are more influenced by darker bands – from Black Sabbath to Joy Division to Interpol to The Afghan Whigs (I also like Burt Bacharach, American Music Club, The National, Spoon and Beck) – and Ike (drums) is all over the place really.

As for our songs, I like writing about human condition, relationships gone bad, hopes and regrets, love and lust, etc.

  1. Wer sind eure wichtigsten Vorbilder und warum?

Who are your most important role models and why?

Charles : I don’t have many role models but I sure am a huge fan of Paul Banks (Interpol), Johnny Marr (The Smiths, The The, Modest Mouse), Mark Eitzel (American Music Club), Paddy McAloon (Prefab Sprout), Paul McCartney, joseph Arthur, Greg Dulli (The Afghan Whigs, The Twilight Singers), PJ Harvey. All these people have a signature in their songwriting. You can recognize them easily and they all find ways to reinvent themselves.

  1. Wie stellt ihr euch das Hören eurer Musik vor? Wo hört ihr am liebsten??

How do you imagine listening to your music? Where do you like to listen??

Charles : I have recorded many songs in my life. Curiously, the only recordings I ever got back to listen to are the Mal Fantôme’s songs. For the first time of my life I actually like listening to our songs.

Driving my VW Jetta alone on the highway, I love crancking up the volume, roll down the windows and sing along.

  1. Welche Rolle spielen die sozialen Medien für eure Karriere? Wie wichtig ist z. B. YouTube oder Instagram für euch?

What role do social media play in your career? How important is YouTube or Instagram for you?

Charles : you can’t expect tob e discovered if you’re not using social media. We’re using mainly Facebook but we also post some stuff on Twitter but not regularly. Facebook helped us connecting with people from all around the globe. And that’s the best part. Some people like you Chris, are making a huge impact on us. We’ll never forget that.

  1. Macht Ihr eigentlich noch was neben der Musik?

Do you actually do anything besides the music?

Charles : I’m a father so family is taking a lot of my time. I want to be present as much as I can fort he development of my daughter. Our house is in a forest pretty high on a mountain about 20 minutes from downtown Quebec city so I love skiing and hiking as much as I can. In the summer making pizza on the BBQ is definately a regular activity.

Jack is a super competitive goaltender (hockey) he plays 150+ games a year. He’s also an avid golfer. As for Ike, he is a very good sailor he’s also into mountain biking (which I also am).

  1. Was war bis jetzt der beste Auftritt, den ihr erlebt habt?

What has been the best performance you’ve seen so far?

Charles : the best shows I’ve seen in my life were often from bands I didn’t expect much. For instance, I’ve never been a Prince fan but I,ll never forget seeing him live in London in 1990. My daughter loves Bruno Mars and I must say, he is the best entertainer I’ve seen in my life. Spoon is a band I love that always put on a great show. On the other hand, I’ve seen Interpol many times and have been deceived most of the time. Same for The National and a few other favorites.

  1. Wer sollte euch spielen, wenn euer Leben verfilmt wird?

Who should play you when your life is filmed?

Charles : This won’t happen. But if it were to happen I guess anyone could do it.

  1. Letzte Frage: Was wünscht ihr euch für die nächsten 10 Jahre, was braucht ihr dafür?

Last question: What do you want for the next 10 years, what do you need for it?

Charles : Mal Fantome has tons of songs. As a matter of fact, we are finishing album #2 at the moment and we have a pretty good idea of what #3 will be like. We easily have 100s of demos in the bank. Our main problem ist hat I take way too much time writing the lyrics, if I were better at it we’d already talk album #10…

So we’d love to stay healthy and focussed to release new songs regularly as we have been doing so far. A dream would be to open for a band on a tour in Europe and the UK. Most bands we love are either from Europe or England.

Also, it wouldbe very nice to meet in person, have a great dinner, a few drinks while listening to music we love! Thanks for all you do for us. It means the world to us.
