Cult of Luna Covered Refused’s “Tannhäuser / Derive” for a Tribute Album

Swedish firebrands Refused are calling it quits and though they’re late to the party, they’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come with a special tribute album featuring bands like Brutus, Gel, and Fucked Up. Earlier today, the Cult of Luna cover of “Tannhäuser / Derive” dropped and we’ve got it for your viewing/listening pleasure below.
This tribute album, officially titled The Shape Of Punk To Come Obliterated features covers in which Refused required the bands in question to “rearrange or deconstruct” each track. What resulted is a different sounding album that’s based on a very seminal work.
Speaking of his band’s contribution to the tribute, Cult of Luna guitarist and vocalist Johannes Persson said he was initially skeptical of the project, but took it on once the stipulation of making the song their own was made clear.
“I hate covers and I usually am very reluctant to spend any time listening to one band playing another band’s songs. However, I’m very excited by the opportunity to dive into another artist’s writing and see how I can contribute my own creative style. For me that’s the only way to justify making a cover, it needs to have the musical mark of the original artist. You need to take what is someone else’s and make it yours by adding, not merely copying.
“We felt very honored when Refused asked us to cover one of their songs. Not only are they a band that we grew up listening and looking up to but they also were the pinnacle of Umeå hardcore. The scene that was the birthplace of our band. After the recording of The Shape Of Punk To Come I remember Dennis boasting about this six minute epic song, their ‘Tannhäuser’. That’s the reason why I picked the song. If you want ‘epic’ Dennis, we’ll give you epic!!! And thanks for the trust.”
The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated will be released on November 8 via Epitaph Records and a limited edition of the 25th anniversary edition of The Shape of Punk to Come will be released in March 2025, but you can preorder/pre-save your copy of both today.
