(Editor’s note: Looking back on 2024, there were so many good albums released that we decided to reach out to some of today’s artists and get them to weigh in on their favorites. What follows is comedian Don Jamieson’s ‘Top Albums of 2024’.)
Since I like so many types of heavy music I feel like I should three different lists this year. It would drive Eddie Trunk crazy when I would rewrite the rules on ‘That Metal Show’ so apologies to the fine people at Metal Sucks but here they are: a hard rock list, a metal list and a death metal list.
HARD ROCK PICKS
Crobot — Obsidian
This band is incapable of writing a bad song, in my opinion. Never not been on one of my end-of-year lists.
Black Country Communion — V
A supergroup in every sense of the word!
Fu Manchu — The Return of Tomorrow
Stoner rock at its finest. Light ‘em up!
Lucifer — V
A little bit of Satan and a hot enchantress behind the mic for the win!
Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown — Electrified
Roots rock played by dudes who still get carded at the liquor store. Tyler Bryant might be our new Jeff Beck.
Honorable mentions:
Tuk Smith & The Restless Hearts
The Dictators
Bobbie Dazzle
Crossbone Skully
Kings Of Mercia
METAL PICKS
Judas Priest — Invincible Shield
The mighty Priest continue to blaze the trail for future metallians.
Saxon — Hell, Fire & Damnation
When I bought their Crusader album in 1984 I never thought 40 years later they’d be making albums just as good. Or even better. But they are.
Tremonti — The End Will Show Us How
Everything this guy touches turns to gold… Creed, Alter Bridge, Tremonti and even his Frank Sinatra Christmas show are top notch.
Black Smoke Trigger — Horizons
Killer new band out of New Zealand who write heavy, catchy tunes and put out “November Rain”-style epic music videos.
Category 7 — Self-Titled
Metal Blade Records jumping into the super group pool and doing it well. John Bush, Phil Demmel, Jason Bittner, Mike Orlando, Jack Gibson…need I say more?
Honorable mentions:
Anvil
Six By Six
DEATH METAL PICKS
1 Body 6 Graves — Open The Floodgates
Personally I think 1 Body 6 Graves is more ecologically sound, but I won’t argue with a band with songs like “Posthumous Butchery” and “Bloated In The River”.
Witch Vomit — Funeral Sanctum
If I wanted to hear a witch vomit I’d go drinking with Meghan Markle. If I want to hear Witch Vomit I’ll listen to this excellent band.
Coffins — Sinister Oath
Another fine Japanese export…put your Loundess albums away and fill your earholes with this fine slab of death metal. You’ll be glad you did.
200 Stab Wounds — Manual Manic Procedures
Because 300 stab wounds is too many and 100 isn’t enough!
Mutilation Barbecue — Amalgamations of Gore
Hey Mutilation BBQ throw some meat on the grill already. Oh wait, where’s Uncle Freddy?
Honorable mentions:
Defeated Sanity
Coffin Rot
Molder
1349
Six Feet Under
